Hmmm...

Well, I have just completed two pre-requisite classes (Sociology and Psychology). It's been rough working 45 hour weeks and taking night classes for three hours each night. I have had to forego playing much tennis. I did make "A's" in both classes however. :)

Now, the dilemma. Through various sources, I have discovered that the pay for RN's fresh out of nursing school is not as great as I was made to believe. Considering my salary and benefits, I would make A LOT less per year being an RN.

So why should I quit my job and blow a huge chunk of my savings to pay for an 18 month nursing school program? It wouldn't make sense. I am now leaning towards staying in the same job I have held for the last 17 years. STAY TUNED...

If it is what you wish to do, go for it. Don't live with regrets. Always reach for the brass rings!

Breet, dear, I say this with great love and respect: You mean you're only "doing the math" now? What were you thinking?

OK, I know what you were thinking: you saw a career you'd be good at; one where you could make a difference in people's lifes. It's only now you're seeing YOUR cost.

Here are a few things to consider.

1. A beginning RN may make less than you do now, but what about after ten years' experience? Fifteen? Will your projected salary at the family biz rise as fast?

2. What happens when Nicky retires? Does he sell out, likely to a competitor who may already have someone in your position? Do you and the siblings take over, and in that case, who runs the company?

3. Assuming Nicky doesn't retire, what about when he passes on?

4. Is money the only concern? You bitch a lot about having to work with your dad's quirks and of some coworkers. Are you prepared to *consciously* accept that as the price for making more money?

5. Do you really want to be a nurse? Knowing how you can be if certain bodily products touch your skin, I've always wondered if you were up to that part of the challenge.

I'm not saying either choice is the right one (or that some other choice isn't better). But these are the kind of questions you'll need to be asking yourself.

Think about it....do you really want to be poor and live where you do now? Are you thinking about moving to New Orleans? You won't be unless you make the bucks to afford it. And that goes for all big cities (not a good place to be broke). And I can just see "you know who" rolling his eyes.....he's not even close to being as poor as he writes about.

Poverty sucks....really.

What? Did you expect to make the same salary when you're a new RN as you do now?

Sometimes, making sacrifices in order to make yourself TRULY happy are needed.

For example: I don't make nearly the kind of salary I once made in my former job, but I AM HAPPY. So I've adjusted my life a little bit, but it's worth it for my sanity.

Brett, I have something to ask.

I am planning a trip to New Orleans to see Southern Decadence. Would you mind if I contact you via email or AOL to get some more details about the event?

Beginning salaries of most positions won't pay possibly what you want. I have no idea what you make right now...but you have a hell of a sweet deal going. Nurses work very very hard for their money. Be ready for holidays, weekends, nights and everything else. Plus pressure, doctor's breathing down your neck (and not in a good way). I'm not trying to be negative or diminish what you're after -- but what you have going in your life right now is what many people would die for. xoxoxoxo

Nursing is not a career you choose for the money. So, if that's your reason, stay where you are.

Everyone makes good points, but the research needs to be done before spending money and time taking classes. My sister is a RN, she started at a county hospital making ok money. Now she is a Nursing Consultant with GE making buttloads of cash after 7 years as a RN. Also she has such a in demand profession she can pretty much live anywhere. Good luck bud.

With Obamacare upon us, the medical industry is going to be in complete cahos. If you decide on nursing, be prepared to work very long hours for very little pay. I would suggest you stay where you are. Only saying...
