Mama Makes Us Go "Hmm..."

My mother has painted all of her life. She sells paintings and even has some of her work in local art galleries. But her latest creation has stumped everyone in the family.

We are like, "I DON'T GET IT!" I stare at her painting and try to find meaning. What is the subject? I thought it was an allegory. Perhaps the chairs symbolize friendship? Three friends sitting together? She said that her subject is light.

I am like, "Can't you put an animal in one of the chairs? How about a teddy bear?" She throws her hands up like I am an idiot.

Her painting was based on this photograph. As you can see, she drew lines on the picture to help bring it to life on the canvas:

What do you guys think? Was this a boo boo? Or is it art?

Definitely art....I see significantly more here than three chairs. Very very nice, Momma...no matter what your kids say.

I'm no art critic, also I don't have an artistic bone in my body, but I like your mom's painting. It looks like the things its supposed to.

You have one damn talented mother. Must run in your family I reckon!

Definitely art - I see friends, melancholy, a 'front porch' where friends get together, and maybe they've gone their separate ways...

I see three chairs, or rather her interpretation of three chairs with the importance being on light and color as opposed to there being a meaning.

Renoir drew paintings of people 'walking' and it was not so much about them walking as it was the use of light and shadow and color and shape.

Nice piece momma.

That is a beautiful painting. I'm really drawn to look at it for the colors and the play on light and shadow.

I shared all of your comments with my Mama and she was delighted. She asked me, "So you don't hate it now???" I told her that it was her first painting that ever made me stop, think, and wonder. It has definitely grown on me!

As a sidenote, she just informed me that she wasn't quite finished with the painting. She has to put a few more highlights on the chair arms and finish the bottom.

I AM proud of her!

Completely art.....

I grew up in Texas and my grandparents had these exact types of chairs on the porch. Same color, same rust peeking through..

Summer evenings from long ago, aunts and cousins in the back yard. Kids eating watermelon slices and taking turs on an old tire swing..

Definately art.

I'd buy it for sure.

That is VERY much art! I think it's beautiful and would gladly hang it in my house! Actually, if I had a "vacation" home, it would hang proudly in my entry way to let people know that this is a place for relaxation and friendship.

As long as someone is paying good price for that painting, it is art. :)

Brett, your mom accomplished something that artists are always looking for...

She made you stop and think about what she put on the canvas. I like the painting, I too thought is was someone famous when I first saw it on the post. Tell your mom to keep it up, it is good for the soul!

I will have to post one of my paintings on my blog someday!

Art is supposed to make you think. It's supposed to generate as many questions as it answers.

I think this is a delightful, realist work.

Tonka got it right in the first sentence of his second paragraph. Your Mom has an amazing perception of sunlight, shade, and color.
