Don't Believe the Hype!

Call me a Doubting Debbie, but I ain't buying it. Where is the scary pandemic? Why are we not dropping like flies? Could this be because the media is once again trying to whip up hysteria?

I have seen it too many times. I remember when the Bush cronies whipped up support for the Iraq war. They scared us into believing that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Collin Powell even did a presentation where our troops were certain to be subjected to biological weapons once they approached a certain distance from Baghdad. It didn't happen.

Lo and behold, Iraq didn't have any weapons of mass destruction. Whoops! Our bad. Sorry for the hundreds of thousands of deaths we caused by invading your country. The Iraq invasion served no purpose other than filling up the coffers of the defense industry, hiking up the price of oil, and getting revenge on Saddam for mocking George H.W. Bush. We were all gullible sheep back then to believe the propaganda.

Now, we should utilize our critical thinking abilities, ask questions, and look at the facts. The statistics on H1N1 do not look all that daunting. Check here, here, and here. While I think this whole hullabaloo was good practice for various world government agencies to test their preparedness, this H1N1 virus ain't the great plague sweeping over humanity.

When religion, government or media instills fear, somebody profits and ultimately controls the masses of weak minded fools. I refuse to be one of them. You may now crawl out of your caves and start making sweet love again.

Thank you Brett for a calm view. I don't quite understand why this particular outbreak is any more or less scary than this winter's flu outbreak which killed far more people. Must be a slow news week.

You're going to see a lot of hype from the Humane Society of the United States about the evils of industrial swine facilities as a reservoir (breeding ground) of disease. However, there are plusses and minuses to that way to raise pigs versus "organic" hobby farm raised techniques where pigs are comingling with other animals more often (like humans and birds).

Anyhow, best to focus on covering your mouth when you cough, washing your hands, and staying home when yer sick.

Hindsight is so much clearer than foresight. Unfortunately, with something that has the potential of becoming a nationwide catastrophe you can’t error on the side of caution. In this case the government acted properly and responsibly. It did not have the luxury of time to see how things were going to develop. Better safe than sorry - should always be the rule when public health is concerned.

One of the things that the MSM has not done is define the terms Pandemic and Epidemic. Pandemic refers to how fast and far an infection spreads. Epidemic refers to the severity of a particular infection, i.e. - death rates. As far as the response of the government is concerned, I think they done a good job of getting message out, and treading a fine line between public panic and common sense information dissemination.

But then again, people are a panicky lot.

Surely you're not attempting to link the "Swine Flu" hype to the Bush administration.....

I need to get a t-shirt that reads: I SURVIVED THE SWINE FLU MEDIA BROADCASTS OF 2009.

Want to protect yourself from swine flu? 1. Wash your hands frequently. 2. Cover your mouth when you sneeze. 3. LOCK YOURSELF IN A CLOSET UNTIL AUGUST!! Swine flu, bird flue and SARS add up to only one thing: ratings for CNN!!

Now where did I put that duct tape and plastic sheeting.

Yeah, from the get go I was all "but the NORMAL flu kills like thousands of Americans each year-- what about THat pandemic?"

Thing is, this isn't a "normal flu" virus. I agree that there's been unprecedented hype about the spread, but this virus is new and is capable of mutating. Before we wind up in a Phillip K Dick novel where we all forget what a real tortoise is, viruses like the H1N1 needs to be tracked and contained.

Blame the media and hyper people for this.

Public Health is doing everything EXACLY right. Not Panic. Not complacency.

Truth is, if this had been the H5N1 (bird) breakout, with it's 50%+ death rate, we'd most likely be facing some scary thoughts.

But Brett - Pandemic flu preparedness is not and never was a Bush cabal scare tactic. Trust me - pandemic preparedness has been a major focus for years.

DO NOT denigrate the many thousands of people have been doing their work protecting your lives from epidemics because some dumb-fuck news reporters don't know shit.

I mean, heck, there's a reason I haven't been around blogs for a few weeks.

Every public health rep I've seen on the teevee (not doctors, I mean CDC and Public Health) has been EXTREMELY careful in what they say.

Blame shitty reporting and scared uninformed people.

But do NOT blame public health. This is under control at ALL because of them.
