You'll Never Walk Alone

I lavished the Shrew with many gifts for Christmas this year. One of the gifts was The Rodgers and Hammerstein Collection. While E.Shrew had already seen most of these films, I have not.

Admittedly, I only remember seeing bits and pieces from "The Sound of Music" as a child. Now before you judge me harshly, please know that my family didn't have cable television until I was 17 years old. My parents also never took us to movies.

I made up for this big void in my life this weekend. I watched "South Pacific", "Oklahoma", "Carousel" and "The Sound of Music". They are all quite beautiful.

The song that moved me the most would have to be "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel. It gripped me in a profound way to where I actually got teary eyed.

It is also Liverpool's Soccer Anthem: (SO COOL!)

Here are the lyrics:

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.

Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never, ever walk alone.

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never, ever walk alone.

IN all seriousness, this is one piece of classic music....and one of my all-time favorites. It means so much and hit so deep.

If you're a soccer fan, the Liverpool fans sing it before each soccer match and it brings chills. About 60,000 fans singing in unison as the team comes out on the field.

Do all gay men like musicals? Seems kinda Stereotypical to me, but what do I know. At least you care enough to give a gift.

Mike:

I had read that on the internet, but your comment encouraged me to see if there was a Youtube video of Liverpool fans singing it. SO COOL! Thanks for the reminder! :)

Yeah, Gary. We all love a good show tune ! ( Hey, Brett. did you know that "Hey Fighting Tigers is originally a broadway show tune ?)

And Mike, You haven't had chills until you've heard a hundred thousand English soccer fans sing the hymn "Jerusalem" (the Chariots of fire Hymn ......)

One of the all time fav Drum & Bugle Corps the Madison Scouts uses this tune as their signature warm up. I've heard it for years as a band geek/fag but never knew where it came from as I've never seen this show. Now I'm going to watch it!

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE is the anthem of the A.I.D.S. movement. It has been sung around the Names Project (Quilt) and at other A.I.D.S. subject events.
