See what happens when you elect a German as Pope?

I find it humorous that our German Pope and the Vatican still have power to cause mass protest around the world. I get peeved that you never find gay people crashing the gates at the Vatican demanding a change in their homophobic ideology. When are gays and lesbians going to rise up and confront those that try to restrict our rights and happiness? That is what I am curious about. The purging of gay priests MUST stop. So must the Church's view that the only acceptable stance for lesbians and gay men is celibacy, silence and invisibility. I say we Catholics do as the Muslims are doing and make our voices heard LOUD and CLEAR. It is time to kick the Vatican to the present day. Who is with me? Come on guys... get off those sex hunt sites for one day and confront those that oppress you.

Brett, Brett, Brett.....

THINK for a moment before you write. A church is defined by its beliefs. It can't change its core beliefs without making itself into something else. You're asking the Catholic Church to turn itself into something other than the Catholic Church.

Churches don't vote on what they believe. Rather, people who believe in what a church teaches as its core beliefs join that church. We aren't talking about decisions like whether you need six candles on an altar or one (or none) to say Mass; we're talking about the core belief of the church that certain behavior is sinful.

You and I may disagree with that belief, but that's irrelevant. What we need to do is find churches whose belief structure is more amenable to us, and ignore those which are not. And encourage everyone else to do the same.

Brett...I am aware of the church's stance for gays to be celibate. Out of ignorance perhaps, where did you find silence and invisibility as a stance. Perhaps because of several positions the Catholic Church takes, it 'generates' silence and invisibility, but I am not sure they have said silence and invisibility are specific stances.

Just saying bud! hugs.

I disagree Kevin. I believe we hound the Catholic Church until they bend to OUR will. We are too passive. It is time to confront those organizations that try to strip us of our rights. We should do it by force if necessary. How will they ever learn from the error of their teachings if we passively and pussily go somewhere else? It is time to stand up and say ENOUGH!

Well... if you think that a (relative) handful of gay protesters are somehow going to force an institution of, oh, what, a billion people to change, yell and holler all you want. Personally, I think you'd be wasting your time.

The Catholic Church isn't "stripping us of our rights". The Catholic Church doesn't have, grant, or bestow any "rights". It may have disproportionate influence on some governmental bodies, but the correct response in those cases, and the only one likely to have any effect, is to hound the governmental body to NOT give in to the pressures of a religious body.

As they did in Spain, where the government of an overwhelmingly Catholic country decided to legalize gay marriage. The Catholic Church protested, and the government basically said "F U, this isn't your business."

Eh, maybe the pope just needs to sexually abuse an alter boy, or something.

Religion is a cancer on society. The Catholic Church is a hate group.

Brett,

I agree with you, but crashing the gates of the Vatican isn't going to endear us to the rest of the world in our fight for equality.

Terrorism hasn't worked for the Muslims: It has only evoked fear and hatred towards an entire religion because of what a small minority of that religion's adherents have done.

I don't know that there is anything we can do to influence an Institution that measures progress in terms of Centuries.

I'm sure that someday gays & lesbians will achieve equality in the Catholic Church. However, that probably won't happen in our lifetimes, and that's sad.

When in Rome...

As an act of protest when I was visiting the Vatican (for the art), I gave my then partner a big, long, wet, sloppy kiss on the pavillion steps as we walked in.

It made me feel better.
