A Hate Mail

"First of all I just want to let you know that I am a white male living in Texas.

I just read your blog about the Mayor race in New Orleans. I tried to respond but apparently you thought you would get some comments that was not supporting of your remarks so you have the area blocked.

I thought you were a cool guy but after reading those racist remarks I find you are just another redneck from down south. But then again, that does not suprise me at all. Especially looking at your pictures you even look like a redneck.

You really should be shamed of what you wrote. It's people like you that give the rest of the white race a bad name not to mention what others will think of you now that you have shown your true colors. You just let all of your friends know exactly what you are about. Maybe you should open your blog comments for all to respond or are you not man enough to take what others my write back to you. What a big man you are.

Those two black guys should have kicked your ass real good for you."

Brett, I've read the three posts and the comments. That you started this conversation is awesome.

To me life is rarely all black and white (not talking about race here - though it fits) but in reality much more of a gray - on a very sliding scale based on our own individual and unique experiences.

Dialogue starts when someone says something and someone else chooses to listen and respond. And then we listen and respond to their comments. It's a process - a great process - a learning and growing process. From real dialogue we get a better mutual understanding of each other. And that's all good. All good.

Hate mail and name calling have no place in real dialogue. They add nothing to the process.

And real dialogue is what you've started here with these posts. And I think it's great!

Yes, I have to agree. However, being a white male and living in the South, one is instantly labeled racist for making any kind of comment or observation.

It's hard to start a conversation and not get that label from people who have never spent quality time here.

Oh, I'm sorry. They may have spent time in Florida at some point. Silly me.

Kudos to you!

Brett may be a redneck but a damn fine one. I am a white male from Seattle. I am NOT raciest at all and I agree with his comments.

I see this hate mail much as I see the racist rant posted by Brett. Brett began this "dialogue" in a heated and less than thoughtful manner and received comments in kind. Maybe next time there will be real analysis of the issues and not some automatic assumption that white is good and black is bad.

You seem to take heart that people are supporting you. That somehow makes this less racist. With a simple Google search I can find any number of groups that wish the Holocaust would have been completed and many who would agree with them. Does that mean they're not bigots also?

What a bunch of boneheads! Did some of them even read the post or can't they understand English? This reminds me of that childrens' story about the naked king. God forbid if someone should say outloud what everyone is thinking.

By the way, there are many of us who think New Orleans should be leveled and returned to the Gulf of Mexico.
